The Perfect Latke Pairing: Homemade Applesauce
A recipe for the unsung hero of your Hanukkah feast
Happy Hanukkah! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!
For me, the celebration of Hanukkah, and overall holiday season, is not complete without a fresh batch of latkes after lighting the menorah. There’s something about that crispy, golden treat that makes the celebration of light feel official.
As expected, social media feeds are flooded with creative takes on the classic Eastern European dish—Carolina Galen’s unique latke varieties have definitely stolen the spotlight this year. But there’s one key aspect of latke preparation that often gets overlooked: the applesauce.
I get it —applesauce is one of those items that’s easy to grab off the shelf. But if you know me, you know I avoid store-bought items like the plague/covid (more on that in a previous post).
If you can peel an apple, you can make applesauce.
This recipe is straightforward, takes just a few pantry staples, and only 30 minutes of your time. I love using Granny Smith or Gala apples, but honestly, any variety you like will do.
The result? A warm, cozy hug in a jar that hits all the nostalgic notes—and the perfect complement to elevate your Hanukkah party. Trust me, your guests will be impressed. It’s simple, satisfying, and most importantly, homemade.
